Manchester United news on Fred

In a statement, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expressed his admiration for Fred’s character and said that he would do anything to be fit for Liverpool’s visit this weekend.

Despite playing a pivotal role in the Reds’ comeback win against Atalanta, the Brazilian succumbed to injury shortly before the final whistle.

The absence of the Brazilian has since raised doubts about his fitness for United’s meeting with Jurgen Klopp’s squad at Old Trafford on Sunday.

On Friday afternoon, Ole responded to questions about Fred’s impact on Wednesday’s win. He was asked if he would be eligible to play again once they returned to domestic action.

“Fred is a very good player, he is a regular for Brazil which, in itself, is a mark of quality,” Solskjaer said.

“He’s got an exceptional personality and attitude to football, such a big smile.

“At the present moment, I can’t say if he’ll be fit or not, but he’ll give everything he can to be there for us.”

It is nothing new for Fred to put all his efforts into getting back to full fitness as soon as possible, having dealt with a similar issue last season when leading up to the Europa League final.

Despite only making a short appearance during extra time in Gdansk, Ole said on Friday that the Brazilian’s attitude towards that situation reflected the kind of individual he is.

“It showed for me when he got injured at the end of last season, and it was supposed to be a six-to-eight-week injury, and he was back the day before the Europa League final, and he was fit.

“He fully joined the training session before, we had to strap him up for the game but if I’d have known [the result] before, maybe I would have played him [from the start].

“But he would have put his hand up and sacrificed himself for the team, that’s for sure.”

In a big match against Atalanta, such as Wednesday’s, his display highlights the impact he can have.

Fred’s availability for the match with our Merseyside rivals, who remain the only unbeaten team in the Premier League, would be a huge boost for Solskjaer and co.

“He’s sharp, he’s nimble, he gets to players, he tackles, he’s never afraid,” Ole explained.

“The development he’s made in the two-and-a-half, almost three years I’ve been here now. He’s great to watch.”
