ABOUT LIGUE 1

It is a French professional league for men’s association football clubs. At the top of the French football league system, it is seen as the country’s primary football competition. Administrated by the Ligue de Football Professional, Ligue 1 is contested by 20 clubs and operates on a system of promotion and relegation from and to Ligue 2.

Seasons in the league run from August to May. Clubs play two matches against each of the other teams in the league – one home and one away – totaling 38 matches throughout the season.

Most games are played on Saturdays and Sundays, with a few games played during weekday evenings. Play is regularly suspended the last weekend before Christmas for two weeks before returning in the second week of January.

As of 2021, Ligue 1 is one of the top national leagues, ranked fifth in Europe, behind England’s Premier League, Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Serie A, and Germany’s Bundesliga.

Ligue 1 was inaugurated on 11 September 1932 under the name National before switching to Division 1 after a year of existence. It continued to operate under that name until 2002 when it adopted its current name.

AS Saint-Étienne is the most successful club with ten league titles in France while Olympique Lyonnais is the club that has won the most consecutive titles (seven between 2002 and 2008).

With the presence of 71 seasons in Ligue 1, Olympique de Marseille holds the record for most seasons among the elite, while Paris Saint-Germain holds the league record for longevity with 47 consecutive seasons (from 1974 to the present).

FC Nantes is the team with the most consecutive unbeaten streak in a single season (32 matches) and has the least number of defeats (1 match) in the 1994/95 season. In addition, FC Nantes also holds the record for the longest time without losing at home with 92 matches from May 1976 to April 1981.

The current champions are Lille, who won in the 2020–21 season. The league has been won on multiple occasions by foreign-based club AS Monaco, the presence of which within the league makes it a cross-border competition.

A total of 74 clubs have played in Ligue 1 from its foundation in the 1932–33 season to the start of the 2021–22 season. Currently, the only founding members of the league are Marseille, Metz, Montpellier, Nice, and Rennes, and are to be playing in Ligue 1. Paris Saint-Germain has been exceptional as the only club to have not suffered points relegation.

They earned a promotion to the first division for the 1974–75 season and have not faltered down since. Paris Saint-Germain was administratively relegated by the league following its split from Paris FC in 1972 but returned to the top flight two seasons later.

Internationally, the most well-known Ligue 1 clubs include Paris Saint-Germain, Olympique Lyonnais, Olympique de Marseille, AS Monaco, AS Saint-Etienne, FC Nantes, Lille OSC, Girondins de Bordeaux, and RC Lens.

1. PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN – €858.75M

Paris Saint-Germain has scored ahead of everyone else in the league in terms of squad value. The club has starred in their rosters like Messi,  Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Marquinhos, Angel Di Maria, Marco Veratti, Keylor Navas, and more.

Valued at €858.75m, it is no surprise that PSG has dominated the domestic scene due to its financial muscle and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

2. olympique lyon – €339.25m

Seven-time French champions and last year’s UEFA Champions League semi-finalists, Olympique Lyonnais are the second-most valuable team in the French top division. They have some high-profile players in their squad like Memphis Depay, Lucas Paquetá, and Moussa Dembélé.

3. AS MONACO – €311.70M

Heading into the top three and breaching the €300m mark, AS Monaco are third amongst the clubs with the highest squad value in Ligue 1 housing players like Cesc Fàbregas, Kevin Volland, and Wissam Ben-Yedder.

4. LOSC Lille – €255.10m

Four-time league title winners, LOSC Lille are valued at €255.10m and have players like José Fonte, Renato Sanchez, and Timothy Weah in their ranks. They will look to improve upon their fourth-place finish last season.

5.StadeRennais FC – €240.50m

Stade Rennais FC has been in the top division for 27 years and feature players like Daniele Rugani, Steven Nzonzi, and Eduardo Camavinga, but have never won the league title.

6. Olympique Marseille – €228.45m

Last year’s league runners-up, Olympique Marseille are valued at €228.45m and will look to go one step further this year to snatch the crown of Ligue 1 champions away from PSG. Marseille’s squad is graced by the likes of, Steve Mandanda, Yuto Nagatomo, and Dimitri Payet.

7. OGC Nice – €193.95m

OGC Nice is valued just below the €200m mark at €193.95m. One of their high-profile signings this year has been former Manchester United and Everton midfielder, Morgan Schneiderlin and he joins the likes of Rony Lopes and Kasper Dolberg in being the highest valued players of the club.

8. FC NANTES – €102.60M

Eight-time league champions, FC Nantes are also now in their eighth consecutive season in the top-tier of French division football. Three of the best players in their squad include Alban Lafont,

9. RC STRASBOURG ALSACE – €102.50M

The first club to break the €100m ceiling is RC Strasbourg Alsace. The club finished 10th last season and will aim to land a European spot this time around. Their charge will be led by the likes of Habib Diallo, Ibrahima Sissoko, and Lamine Koné.

10. FC GIRONDINS BORDEAUX – €94.55M

Six-time French Ligue 1 winners, FC Girondins Bordeaux are valued at €94.55m and will look to improve upon their 12th-place finish last year. Their best players include the likes of Laurent Koscielny, Hatem Ben-Arfa, and Josh Maja.
